Eastern Black Sea region with ITEM Travel Turkey

ITEM Travel, our DMC partner, has a wealth of experience in the planning and coordination of meetings, incentives, events, and private parties. Here we feature the Eastern Black Sea Region where the most beautiful alpine meadows in Turkey are seen, and the most mountainous part of the Black Sea region. Along the whole region it is the most difficult to access, most rugged and most emigrant part.  Rize, Artvin, Trabzon, Gümüşhane, Bayburt are important settlement centers. The most developed provinces of the region are Trabzon and Rize. It is possible to see the examples of the alpine meadows especially in the Rize region. Ayder, Anzer, and Çağırankaya plateaus are good examples of these.  Here the people earn their living from fishing and agriculture growing mainly tea, hazelnut and corn.

Historical

From Pontus to Rome, Byzantine, Seljuk and Ottoman, the Black Sea Region has hosted important civilizations for centuries. There are dozens of places to see in this geography, which has a rich history with monasteries, churches, historical mansions, castles, settlements dating back thousands of years and rock tombs.

The Sumela Monastery; Greek Orthodox monastery dedicated to the Virgin Mary, located in the Trabzon Province is one of the oldest monasteries in the Christian World. According to historians, the monastery was founded by two priests, Barnabas and Sophronius, from Athens during the reign of the Emperor Theodosius I (AD 375-395). It was later restored in 6th & 13th centuries and took its present- day form only after then.

Built in 1868 by mostly the Georgian residents and a small group of Greeks, Yason Church (also known as Jason Church), is an important Christian site located on the peninsula of Yason Cape in the province of Ordu. Today this structure stands intact with the walls of the church yard, ruins of the ancient port and the fishing ponds remaining from the past centuries.

Santa Ruins is a spectacular ancient site in the province of Gümüşhane. Founded as a medieval mining town in around the 1500s, Santa was a very prosperous settlement and it played a very important role in the mining industry of the region.
