Apart from the Inca Citadel of Machu Picchu, there are plenty of Inca ruins around and outside the city of Cusco. One of the lesser-known ruins is the ancient site of Choquequirao, which is located north of the Valley of Apurimac river, approximately 193,000 m (633,202 ft) from Cusco. It’s often referred to as the “little sister” of Machu Picchu.
The Choquequirao trek is one of the most adventurous and exciting in the Cusco region. It’s also a great alternative to the Inca Trail. It’s a 65,000 m (21,326 ft) trek, passing through snow-capped peaks, deep canyon, and cloud forest.
The ancient site of Choquequirao sits atop a hill rising 1600 m (5249 ft) above the Apurimac. Although the site is yet to be fully excavated, it’s a beautiful place to visit and explore. The complex has a similar structure to the Machu Picchu but has a unique character, featuring terraces and extensive walls.
The hike up to the site is quite challenging but you can easily toughen it out, and be rewarded with stunning views of the valley as well as the mountains of Urubamba and Anta provinces. You’ll also have an opportunity to travel back in time and learn more about the history of the Incas.
