The Andean Condor is perhaps the most majestic bird in South America. It’s dubbed the national symbol of Peru. It is believed that the greatest number of Andean condors in the world can be found in Peru.
This amazing creature is the world’s largest raptor and a notable animal of the spirit world according to Inca cosmology. Condors are large and heavy and this makes flying a bit difficult for them. The bird can weigh up to 33 pounds (15 kilos) and has a wingspan of around 3 meters (10 feet).
They thrive in mountainous regions with highest peaks where there’s a lot of wind to help them soar in the sky. Due to its excellent eyesight, the Andean condor can spot a meal from very high up in the air.
The best location to spot Andean Condors in Peru is the Mirador Cruz del Condor in Colca Canyon.
