Our DMC partner, ITEM Travel Turkey advises the best time to visit Turkey is when the weather lets you enjoy all of it and more. Depending on the season you visit in, you might see Turkey as a region of natural wonders, rich cultural festivities or snowy adventures. Here’s a handy guide on the best time to visit Turkey, suited for you no matter which of the above you prefer.
When is the best time to visit Turkey?
While summer is a popular time for tourists to visit Turkey, the best time to visit Turkey is during spring, which lasts from March to May. The temperature ranges between a pleasant 50°F-77°F and average precipitation is low, which means the conditions to explore Turkey's beautiful cities and towns on foot are ideal. This, along with summer, is also typically peak tourist season in Turkey. Cappadocia, home to the iconic natural rock formations known as Fairy Chimneys, turns a beautiful bright green during this time. Hot air balloon rides over the region will allow for stunning views at sunrise and sunset. This is also tulip season in Turkey. The Istanbul Tulip Festival typically takes place through the month of April, so head to Emirgan Park (which overlooks the Bosphorus), Gulhane Park or Camlica Hill to enjoy swathes of bright red, purple, yellow, white and pink tulips in bloom. This is also a great time to take a dip in the thermal pools of Pamukkale in the Büyük Menderes Valley. Pleasant temperatures mean that you can spend time outdoors comfortably, and the pools also tend to be less crowded in spring as compared to summer.
Autumn is also a great time to visit to experience the temperature go from warm to cool and watch the leaves change color. In Cappadocia, the views go from green to yellow and red in this season, and are great to take in as you fly above the rocks in the soft sunlight. Head to Artvin in northeastern Turkey for views of tall mountains bathed in fiery red and their glowing reflections in beautiful alpine lakes, or camp out at Yedigöller National Park amidst fir, oak, maple and hazelnut trees.
Temperatures throughout the year
From March to May, temperatures range from 50°F to 77°F, while summer (June to August) sees highs of 118°F. Fall is slightly warmer than spring with temperatures ranging from 54°F to 82°F, and winter can be chilly with lows of 37°F.
