It is this persistence that got her to work in her family marble business as a teenager, that allowed her to open her first restaurant without any training at age 22, and to fight for her sexual freedom which led to the Supreme Court’s landmark decision on LGBT rights. Born in then-Calcutta to a Marwari business family, Ritu joined the family stone business when she was just 16. Her work kept taking her to Italy, where she developed a liking for the local cuisine and learnt how to cook it proficiently. In 1993, at age 22, she set up Mezza Luna, an Italian restaurant, in Delhi’s Hauz Khas Village. Then Dalmia moved to London, where she opened Vama, an Indian fine dining restaurant. The restaurant was a big success and won rave reviews. In 2000, she came home to open her first DIVA. Dalmia never looked back, going on to open one award winning restaurant after another and managing a staff of 300 plus. After treating Indian diners to delectable Italian fare, she does a swap. With Cittamani, her eatery in Milan, she’s getting Italians to taste and enjoy the flavours of the Indian subcontinent. Bearing the flag of modern Indian cuisine high. In June 2016, Dalmia and five others, all members of the LGBT community themselves, filed a writ petition in the Supreme Court of India challenging Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code. This resulted in the 2018 landmark judgment in Navtej Singh Johar and others v. Union of India in which the Supreme Court unanimously declared the law unconstitutional “in so far as it criminalises consensual sexual conduct between adults of the same sex”.
